The Middle of Nowhere

We spent 14 delirious hours in our truck today driving from Austin TX to Santa Fe NM. There was so much nothingness that it was surreal. We'd ride thru a little town every once in awhile but mostly it was just land for as far as the eye could see. We went by Texas wind farms and corn fields. There wasn't really a lot to take pictures of but, here are the few we did take on the road, most of them staring Pepper.

Last night I had a friendly conversation with a man I met at the Pecan Grove RV park in Austin, he'd been RV-ing for 40 years with his wife. He inquired about our trip and when I told him our path he asked me if I'd taken the wind into consideration. Why on earth would I do that? He informed me that with our rig we wouldn't be able to go over 50 most of the way after we got to north TX. The wind was very bad, much stronger than I'd anticipated but it only slowed us down a little. We typically stay between 60-65 but with the wind we didn't go over 60 and in some areas we did have to keep it around 50.

Something did occur to me on our long drive, it was how amazing it was to be out on the road the way we were with a car passing only every so often and only a town here and there. It was a feeling of awesomeness and when the hell are we going to get there all at the same time.

Thankfully we both enjoy audio books and mad-libs!!! During a 14 hour drive we only got on each other's nerves once and it was brief. Not too bad after rising at 4am, breaking down the camper to leave and then driving all damn day.
